Guides for screw makers

Straight answers to the questions buyers ask us most, from choosing a header to planning a full line.

Choosing a cold header by screw size

A header is sized by two numbers: the wire diameter it can cut, and the longest blank it can cut. The blank must be longer than the finished screw because part of it is pushed up to form the head.

For a rolled thread, the wire is close to the thread’s pitch diameter, so it is slightly under the nominal size. Send us the drawing and we confirm the exact wire.

Thread rolling or thread cutting

Thread rolling presses the thread into the blank between two hardened dies. No material is cut away, so there are no chips and less wire is used per screw. Rolling is also much faster than cutting, which is why it is the standard for screws and bolts made in volume.

What a complete screw line needs

At minimum, a header and a thread roller. Add a trimming machine for hex and flange heads, or a slotting machine for slotted heads and the BT notch on self tapping screws. Recessed heads such as Phillips are formed in the header, so they need no extra machine.
